From Origins to Obligations: What Creation Stories Say about Natural Resource Use
Description: Some of the most viable locations for geothermal energy in Canada, Aotearoa–New Zealand, and the United States are on or near Indigenous lands and traditional territories. This talk explores how creation stories shape contemporary debates over natural resource development, focusing on geothermal projects in Hawai‘i and Aotearoa–New Zealand. Although they share Polynesian roots, Native Hawaiians and Māori communities draw on distinct origin stories, biocultural heritage, and land-based vocabularies that lead to different views on whether—and how—geothermal energy should be developed. These cases reveal how creation stories inform sovereignty, risk perception, and visions for resource management today.
