April 28 marks the National Day of Mourning, a time to honour and remember workers killed or injured on the job or suffered a work-related illness. Join the Government of Alberta's Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration along with the Workers' Compensation Board to reflect on workplace fatalities and discuss how to prevent further work-related injuries and deaths.
Presenters will include:
- Workers' Compensation Board
- Gain insights into the Workers' Compensation Board's role in the event of a workplace fatality, encompassing the decision-making process and the benefits and services provided.
- OHS Investigation Resolution Unit (IRU)
- The IRU supports injured workers and next-of-kin on serious and fatal workplace incidents, liaises with the Crown Prosecutors throughout OHS prosecutions, as well as implements and oversees Creative Sentencing and Enhanced Regulatory Supervision. Learn about their work and how they support next-of-kin and families.
- Annette Smith
- Annette is the mother of Zachary Smith, an 18-year-old worker who was fatally injured on the job. She will join us to share about her son and how this tragic event not only impacts the lives of family and friends, but an entire community.
- Employment Standards
- Employment Standards will discuss the importance of breaks, rest days and vacation for workers to perform well and safely.
- OHS Prevention Services
- The Prevention Services branch will review Alberta's injury, illness and fatality statistics and talk about how to develop OHS management systems to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities.
