Energy Talks: Microplastic Breakdown
Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2026
7:00pm to 8:00pm
In partnership with: Future Energy Systems

This talk will present experimental research on microplastic breakdown in simulated aquatic environments and the ambiguity inherent to the investigation.
Plastic is ubiquitous with water, and though microplastic awareness is increasing, knowledge gaps remain. Science investigates microplastic behavior in environmental systems in order to better understand the implications of this diverse contaminant class. Microplastics, like the environments they break down in, are complex systems. This complexity is explained using multidisciplinary lenses of systems thinking and sustainability.
Speaker: Kiera Greenaway, MSc Student, University of Alberta
Kiera Greenaway completed both her BSc and MSc in Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta, where she conducted thesis research under the supervision of Dr. Jeffrey Farner. Her scientific work explored the physicochemical changes of microplastics in aquatic environments. Kiera’s academic interests include microplastic degradation, sustainable development, and teaching.
This speaker series is presented in partnership with Future Energy Systems. They focus on multidisciplinary research that develops the energy technologies of today and the near future, integrates them into today’s infrastructure, and examines possible consequences for our society, economy, and environment. Energy Talks provides an opportunity for you to engage with researchers and learn more about their work. Visit their website for more information: https://www.futureenergysystem..
Online registration is required for this meetup. This event will be in-person, located at the Strathcona Branch in the Program Room.
