Edmonton's Patients in Transition Summit will bring together people with lived experience, caregivers, healthcare leaders, clinicians, researchers, community organizations, entrepreneurs, industry, investors, economic-development organizations and decision-makers for a highly interactive day focused on better, safer and more equitable transitions in care — and on turning Alberta-grown ideas into solutions that can be tested, adopted, commercialized and scaled.
This is not simply a day of presentations. Participants will work together to identify practical priorities, service gaps and opportunities, explore emerging solutions, and help shape a roadmap for a Patients in Transition Living Lab Network within the proposed province-wide Health Everywhere Living Lab Ecosystem. The ambition is both social and economic: improve patient and caregiver experience while creating clearer pathways for innovation, procurement, company growth, investment and market adoption.
Health innovations rarely fail to commercialize and scale and generate impact because of technology alone. They often struggle because their development is isolated from the real-world contexts in which they must ultimately function. At the same time, transitions between acute, primary, assisted-living, recovery, rehabilitation, community and social-care settings can expose gaps in information, responsibility, access and continuity. Those same gaps create opportunities for Alberta innovators to co-develop solutions around clearly defined, high-value problems.
Alberta's evolving health-system structure creates an important opportunity to strengthen cross-agency pathways and to develop Living Labs where patients, caregivers, clinicians, researchers, health-system leaders, industry and economic-development partners can co-create, test and evaluate innovations under realistic conditions. Done well, this can improve outcomes and system efficiency while accelerating real-world evidence, procurement readiness, commercialization, investment and the growth of Alberta health-technology companies.
The Summit is part of a three-event province-wide Health Everywhere Living Lab Series.
