The future of our planet depends on the innovations we create today. In this engaging lecture, Dr. Rafiq Ahmad explores how engineers can play a leading role in addressing global challenges related to sustainability, climate change, waste, resource efficiency, and resilient communities. Drawing on his experiences in smart manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence, digital twins, and circular economy systems, Dr. Ahmad shares real-world examples of technologies that are transforming industries and improving lives. From recycling and advanced manufacturing to intelligent infrastructure and space-inspired innovations, the lecture demonstrates how small engineering solutions can create significant and lasting impact. Speaker Bio:
Dr. Rafiq Ahmad is a leader in Industrialized Robotics, Smart Manufacturing, and Sustainable Technologies. As a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, he founded and directs the Smart & Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Laboratory (SMART Lab) and the Agile Learning Factory (AllFactory), advancing Industry 4.0/5.0 innovation through robotics, AI, digital twins, and advanced manufacturing.
Dr. Ahmad is also the co-founder of Waste Parrot Inc., recognized by NASA as a global winner of the Lunar Recycling Challenge for developing sustainable manufacturing solutions with applications on Earth and beyond. He is the author of The 10P Model for Success, a framework that helps individuals transform purpose into achievement through ten principles of personal and professional growth.
His contributions have earned recognition, including Edify’s Top 40 Under 40 (2022) and the ASTech Award for Digital Technology Innovation (2023). Through research, entrepreneurship, and education, Dr. Ahmad continues to develop technologies and talent that drive a more innovative, sustainable, and resilient future.
