On Thursday, Oct. 22nd at 7pm help us welcome local poet Shemi Ajibola for the launch of I Wish I Was A Person.

I Wish I Was a Person is an Afro-surrealistic poetry collection exploring identity, invisibility, race, grief, love, faith, family, power, and the restless search for belonging. Through surreal imagery and unflinching reflection, Sheaji transforms personal memory and political history into poems populated by mango trees, mirrors, mortars, mothers, lovers, gods, and ghosts.

Sheaji is a 19-year-old Nigerian-Canadian poet and University of Alberta student based in Edmonton. He began writing as a way to grieve his father and the childhood he once knew among the palm trees of Lagos, now replaced by the mountains of Alberta. What began as something deeply personal has grown into a beautiful community of poets and readers across the province.
