Set against the backdrop of the autumn harvest, the Prairie Skies & Perogies Festival invites visitors to experience authentic food, live entertainment, family activities and cultural traditions while enjoying the beauty of Prairie Gardens during apple season. Whether you're discovering Ukrainian culture for the first time or reconnecting with your own family traditions, you'll find a warm prairie welcome, delicious food and meaningful experiences for all ages. Participants will learn how to prepare traditional dough, make classic fillings and handshape perogies while discovering the stories and traditions behind one of Ukraine's most beloved foods. Traditional Ukrainian Wheat Weaving Workshop Weaving Together History, Harvest & Heritage Additional Ticket Required Step into one of Ukraine's oldest folk traditions and discover the timeless art of wheat weaving. Rooted in centuries of agricultural life, wheat weaving celebrates the harvest and symbolizes gratitude, prosperity, hope and the enduring connection between people and the land. Ukraine has long been known as the "Breadbasket of the World," with its fertile soils producing abundant grain that sustained generations of families. Wheat became much more than a crop, it represented life, community and thanksgiving. Beautiful handwoven creations were displayed in homes, used during weddings and Christmas celebrations and given as heartfelt gifts to family and friends. During this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the traditional techniques used to prepare and weave natural wheat straw while creating their own keepsake to take home. Along the way, you'll hear the stories behind this remarkable folk art and discover how simple strands of wheat became lasting symbols of family, faith, and abundance. Meet the Artist: Irene Topolnitsky Irene Topolnitsky has practised the traditional art of wheat weaving since 1983, inspired by stories her father shared about wheat weaving in Ukraine. Her beautiful creations celebrate the connection between Ukrainian culture, agriculture and the harvest. Irene has shared her craft through teaching and demonstrations across Canada and will guide festival guests in creating their own handwoven wheat keepsake. Traditional Ukrainian Pysanky Workshop Discover the Art, History & Symbolism of Pysanky Additional Ticket Required Experience one of Ukraine's most treasured folk traditions by creating your own Pysanka using the centuries-old wax-resist decorating technique. More than beautifully decorated eggs, Pysanky are works of art that tell stories through intricate symbols, colours and patterns passed down from generation to generation. Traditionally created to celebrate spring, renewal, and hope, each Pysanka carries its own unique meaning. Symbols representing the sun, wheat, flowers, birds, stars, and nature express wishes for health, happiness, prosperity, protection and a bountiful harvest. The process of creating a Pysanka is both creative and reflective, offering participants the opportunity to slow down while learning about the rich cultural traditions of Ukraine. During this hands-on workshop, participants will be guided through each step of the traditional wax-resist method, using a kistka (stylus), beeswax and vibrant dyes to create their own beautifully decorated egg to take home.
