Part of: The Magpie Collection: A Dance Festival

Get introduced to breaking, hip-hop’s original dance style (often incorrectly called “breakdancing”). Centered on the music and the rhythms of the funk drummer, this workshop explores foundational elements including toprock, go-downs, footwork, and freezes.
Unlike choreography-focused dance classes often associated with the term “hip-hop,” this beginner-friendly session introduces breaking as a cultural, groove-based, and improvisational dance form. Participants will learn how bounce, rhythm, and musical connection serve as the foundation for movement and self-expression.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Branden “Busyrawk” Cha is a South Korean breaker based in amiskwacîwâskahikan, Treaty 6. Shaped by nearly two decades of experience in breaking, he remains rooted in the Bronx (New York) foundations of breaking and rocking. He approaches movement through music, centering groove, bounce, and connection with the drummer as fundamental principles. As a member of Ready to Rock, he emphasizes cultural authenticity, rhythm, and the deep connection between dance and music.
