Jason Nixon, Alberta's newly appointed President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Finance, talks about the province's economy and the many changes it is experiencing right now.
The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce is sitting down with the newly appointed President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Finance, Jason Nixon, to talk about the province's economy and the many changes it is experiencing right now.
Alberta's economy has flipped. Roughly six months ago, the Alberta government prepared a budget with a significant deficit, spurred by lower oil prices. Now, after months of a sustained surge in oil prices from the war in Iran, Alberta's deficit could be shrinking.
The province is also preparing for a provincial referendum in October on nine questions, including the future of Alberta within the Canadian federation.
This isn't a replay of March's Provincial Budget Luncheon. The landscape has shifted too dramatically since then.
Given the new circumstances, we'll revisit previous commitments on public safety, healthcare, education, and keeping taxes competitive. We will also learn about the new initiatives that Minister Nixon is pursuing since his new appointment.
Expect a direct, thought-provoking discussion on where Alberta's money is coming from, where it's going, and what kind of province Alberta is choosing to become.
