In this session we will be focusing on several key points that go into screenwriting including story ideas, story structure, formatting, re-writes, screenwriting contests, etc. The session is geared towards the writer and not learning “How To Write A Screenplay”, and the steps it takes getting from idea to completion. This is a chance for emerging and curious screenwriters to have an opportunity to find their voices, learn the ins and outs of screenwriting, and grow beyond the session.

Eric Janvier is a Indigenous filmmaker who has found space in both the narrative and documentary fields. He trained at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, California with a Focus on Film and TV Producing. Upon graduation, he worked on the award-winning pilot episode of APTN’s Blackstone in a mentorship role. Eric was the producer of the award-winning short film Gods Acre, which went on to screen at numerous festivals across the globe and receive countless accolades. He was a co-producer on an Ad campaign in partnership with Marvel and Stand Up To Cancer that screened both online and in Times Square leading up to the Release of Avengers Endgame. He was an Associate Producer on Cody Lightning’s Hey Viktor!, a spiritual sequel to Smoke Signals.

His work as a Director includes the short film Reserved, which went to appear on CBC’s Short Film Face Off in 2020, as well as the National Film Board produced Short Documentary, Heartbeat of a Nation. His work on Heartbeat of a Nation helped cement Eric as an Emerging Director in both the Canadian and Indigenous Film Communities. Among his accolades, Eric has recieved many fellowships and awards from TIFF-CBC Films Screenwriter Award in 2017, the Netflix-BANFF Diversity of Voices Initiative, TIFF’s Filmmakers Lab in 2023, among countless others. In 2023 Eric was invited to join the Directing Team of Fargo Season 5, where he was mentored under the Emmy Award Winning Director Dana Gonzales. Most recently he wrote and directed his first feature film Last Stop Video Rentals, with support from Telefilm’s Talent to Watch Program slated for release in 2025.

BIPOC Media Lab’s purpose is to hold space for community members that identify from the BIPOC community (Black, Indigenous, Person of Colour)
