This dialogue invites filmmakers, educators, industry leaders, and community members to dialogue around building a space for the growing Indigenous storytelling industry.
Edmonton has long been home to many firsts in Canadian Indigenous film. The National Film Board of Canada established the Indian Film Crew in 1968 in Edmonton as part of its Challenge for Change initiative. The Indian Film Crew is widely recognized as the first Indigenous-led production unit within a national public broadcaster. It was created to support Indigenous filmmakers in telling their own stories and became a foundational step in Indigenous-controlled media production in Canada. Edmonton was home to Studio One: the First Indigenous NFB Studio and is home to the Dreamspeakers International Indigenous Film Festival; Canada’s first and longest-running Indigenous Film Festival. The discussion will be led by Indigenous Filmmaker Georgina Lightning.
