Join us for a curator’s tour of 5 Artists 1 Love, an annual exhibition celebrating Black creativity in our community. Curator Darren Jordan will share insights into the depth and vibrancy of Edmonton’s African Canadian creative communities and offer context on the artists and works on display.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of 5 Artists 1 Love and features 20 incredible artists working across a wide range of media.

About the Speaker:

Born in the UK, Darren immigrated to Canada with his family in 1975 at the age of eight. In his home, he was taught to appreciate the beauty and diversity of other cultures as well as what they had to offer. He believes that food, music, dance and art are conduits to such exploration. This is reflected in his work, which often incorporates a great deal of colour & expression with some graphic elements.

Through 5 Artists 1 Love, Darren has worked at bringing together various artistic disciplines within the “Black Community” under one accessible network. He was quoted as saying,” If you can’t find a scene or there is no scene, then you make a scene.”

About the Exhibition:

5 Artists 1 Love is an annual exhibition that celebrates the artistic vibrancy and range of Edmonton’s African-Canadian communities, from Angola to Zanzibar, Togo to Tobago, or Brazil to Barbados! This phenomenal art exhibition showcases the diversity of the African diaspora, promotes emerging and established artists, develops global African and Caribbean cultures and celebrates African-Canadian brilliance.

To mark our 20th anniversary, we have revisited our history and invited 20 accomplished artists who have previously participated in the 5 Artists 1 Love exhibition throughout the years. These esteemed alumni return with works that highlight their unique styles and creative visions, enriched by their diverse global and local experiences.

Organized by the Art Gallery of Alberta and 5 Artists 1 Love. Curated by Darren W. Jordan
