Lectures On Tap is a unique event series where professors, experts, and storytellers bring fascinating talks into the pub. Grab a drink and a bite and settle in for a thought provoking lecture in a relaxed, casual setting! Good talk, great company!

Did you know there is a "sleep crisis"? Everywhere we turn, we hear that we are doing sleep wrong, and that we should have better "sleep hygiene." This tongue-in-cheek talk examines how we've got to this way of thinking, showing that sleep is also a cultural and political minefield, not just a matter of individual wellbeing. Come along to learn about revenge bedtime procrastination, how the past was really dark, and why famous men feel the need to tell us they never sleep.

Dr. Cressida J. Heyes is Professor of Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Alberta, where she also holds a Henry Marshall Tory Chair. She is a prolific academic author, and her most recent book, Anaesthetics of Existence: Essays on Experience at the Edge, was published by Duke University Press and won the prestigious David Easton Prize in political theory from the American Political Science Association. You can find out more about her research and teaching at cressidaheyes.com. Cressida is better known in Edmonton as host of the podcast Sleep is the New Sex, which you can find on all major platforms or at our website, sleepisthenewsex.ca.
