Join Mikisew Cree First Nation and Keepers of the Water for a two-day gathering focused on one of the most urgent environmental and human rights issues facing our communities today: the ongoing tarsands tailings crisis and the protection of water.
This event will bring together Indigenous leaders, knowledge keepers, land and water defenders, legal experts, scientists, youth, and allies to share knowledge, discuss impacts, and explore pathways forward grounded in Indigenous rights, Treaty obligations, and traditional water knowledge.
Topics will include:- Proposed “treat and release” of toxic tailings
- Alberta’s Bill 7 and interbasin water transfers
- Water shortages, drought, and conservation
- Impacts of tailings ponds on downstream communities
- Indigenous laws, Treaty rights, and water governance
- Traditional water knowledge and stewardship
