The University of Alberta’s Department of East Asian Studies and International Education and Enrolment are proud to welcome distinguished historian Vicente L. Rafael for a special International Week lecture.

Featured Topic: The Authoritarian Imaginary

Prof Vicente Rafael uses the example of Filipino president and ICC war criminal to explore the phenomenon of popular authoritarians.

"President Rodrigo Duterte ended his term in May 2022 amid a violent drug war and the hardships of the COVID pandemic. His job approval rating remained high - as much as 91% according to one poll - even as the majority of the people had become increasingly pessimistic about the state of the country. And to this day, despite having been arrested by the ICC, his popularity continues to hold, Why this massive popularity amid the most catastrophic of conditions? Why did his governance by fear meet with such widespread approval? Or is it the case that focusing on Duterte, we've missed something much more fundamental, namely the historical persistence of structures of power that envelop and enable the survival of sprawling urban communities where his support was most evident? How did his authoritarian imaginary circulate and reinforce existing notions of community?"

The lecture is expected to address themes from his recent work, examining the "authoritarian imaginary" and the historical persistence of power structures in the Philippines. It explores why certain fantasies of sovereign power—the power to decide who shall live and who shall die—resonate and circulate within community logic.

Vicente L. Rafael is a Professor of History at the University of Washington and one of the most prominent scholars of Southeast Asian history. His work explores the complex intersections of language, power and colonialism in the Philippines.

Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for audience Q&A. This event is open to students, scholars, and members of the general public, particularly those with an interest in Philippine history, political science and colonial studies.
