Winter is a magical time to watch birds! Join the River Valley Alliance and our partners at the Wild Bird General Store for a cozy afternoon of birdwatching in the heart of Edmonton's river valley. With the trees bare and the snow settled, it's one of the easiest times of year to spot—and hear—the many bird species that call this area home.

This walk will invite participants to explore the beauty of Whitemud Park while learning tips and tricks from local birding experts, including Steve Kulak from the Wild Bird General Store.

This event is part of the Christmas Bird Count, a North American tradition that contributes valuable data to bird conservation. Whether you're an experienced birder or just starting out, this is a welcoming, educational, and relaxing way to spend an afternoon in nature.

☕ What to Expect:

  • A gentle, family-friendly walk (up to 3 km) on hard-packed snow trails

  • Expert guidance on identifying and cataloguing local bird species

  • Opportunities to enjoy hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fire circle

  • A great way to connect with others who love the river valley and its wildlife

❄️ What to Bring:

  • Warm layers, gloves, and sturdy winter boots

  • Binoculars (if you have them!)

  • A sense of curiosity and appreciation for winter wildlife

The walk will proceed unless conditions are extremely cold. Come join us to celebrate community, conservation, and the peaceful beauty of the winter river valley.
