This lecture introduces and explains the principles behind BAAKFIL.

In conjunction with the EDW Panel Event with the Edmonton Heritage Council; this companion lecture introduces and explains the principles behind BAAKFIL, a new business model and design approach to infill that respects the character of mature neighbourhoods and their streets while preserving existing housing stock to add gentle density to a site.

Densification and bylaw reform is an emotional, controversial topic in the city - in fact all across the country. To date nobody has explored a viable, respectful alternative to infill or the dramatic infusion of overbuilding on single family sites in mature neighbourhoods. BAAKFIL is one such alternative based on context, affordability, gentle density and design excellence, an attempt to change the narrative.
