Join Waste Free Edmonton for a Sustainability Social! We will have fabulous guest speakers, fun activities, and opportunities to connect!

If you are looking to reduce your waste and connect with like-minded Edmontonians, look no further! Waste Free Edmonton is hosting our 3rd Sustainability Social. Let's connect and reduce our footprint together. Your ticket includes delicious vegetarian appetizers and a drink ticket, additional beverages will be available for purchase.

Join us at the Bell in Scona for an evening packed with passionate experts and hands on activities, all in the name of waste reduction! While the event begins at 6PM, doors will open at 5:45, giving you a little bi of extra time to settle in if needed.

Part 1
This event functions in two parts - the first part, we hear from an expert panel of speakers. We will learn about an area of waste. This year, the focus is on lawn and garden waste, presentations begin at 6:15 PM. We will hear from:

  • Waste Free Edmonton's Co-founder, Melissa G, will start us off with an overview of Waste Free Edmonton and the recently launched Beyond the Lawn campaign
  • Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society will speak to our Relationship to the Land, providing context for the event
  • Kate and Liz of the Edmonton Native Plant Society will present on the importance of native plants for fostering biodiversity.
  • Ilan from the Alberta Native Bee Council will cover how to identify native bees and tips on how to support bees
  • Habitat YEG's Melissa P will provide information on sharing your outdoor space by turning it into a wildlife habitat and touch on invasive species, plants, and birds.
  • Dustin from Sustainable Food YEG will discuss organics as a resource and growing your own soil
  • Dora of Natures Elements will round out our presentations with a talk on using our yards for connection and enrichment, water harvesting, and designing your landscape.

Part 2

Activities will begin following the presentations, around 7:30 PM.

Following the speakers, we will have time to mingle, build community, and continue the conversation. Treat yourself to the vegetarian taco bar, enjoy our free activities, and make some new friends! This year, our activities include:

- Silk Screen a previously loved Tee with the help of an artist from SNAP (See Tips Below)
- Plant a native seed to take home with the help of Edmonton Native Plant Society
- Learn about traditional medicine with Bent Arrow and make your own smudge kit
- Learn more about native bees with Alberta Native Bee Council
- Haven't made it to one of our Climate Chats yet? Fear not! We are bringing one to you. Join us for a mini Climate Chat activity on site.

We cannot wait to see you at this incredible event! This is sure to be a fabulous evening of learning, sharing, and creating.

TIP: Bringing your own Tee or Tote? We recommend something that isn't too textured, and keeping to a solid, lighter colour. Don't have anything in your closet that fits the bill? Don't worry! We will have a selection of previously loved Tees, purchased from our local gem Blenderz Garment Recyclers.
