Elders in ResidenceProgram

The Edmonton Public Library’s Elders in Residence Program (EIR) provides access to an Indigenous Elder and Knowledge Holders for EPL customers. The Elder in Residence hosts biweekly programs and speciality programs centred on Indigenous knowledge and work to ensure that ceremony is an active part of our library system. Through classes, events and ceremonies, we bring together people from all backgrounds to learn about Indigenous culture, protocol and processes.

Howard Mustus Jr

Howard “Howie” Mustus Jr. has been a dedicated pipe carrier of Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation for over 20 years, deeply involved in the Big Lodge and community ceremonies. His extensive experience and profound respect for traditional practices have made him an important member in his community’s cultural and spiritual life.

As an experienced trainer of ceremony helpers, Howie plays a vital role in ensuring the continuation and integrity of traditional practices. His work extends beyond local boundaries; he has provided cultural support for the Indian Residential Schools (IRS) program and participated in numerous National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation events across Canada.

Howie’s commitment to healing and cultural preservation was recognized on an international scale when he was chosen as an Elder and entrusted with the Pipe for the Healing Our Spirits Worldwide Conference. This prestigious event, held in Australia, New Zealand, and across North America, gathered over 4,000 attendees, highlighting his significant contributions to indigenous healing practices.

In addition to his ceremonial roles, Howie imparts invaluable Traditional medicinal and harvesting teachings to the youth, ensuring the knowledge and skills of his ancestors are passed on to future generations.

A devoted family man, Howie balances his community responsibilities with his roles as a husband and father, demonstrating the importance of family and tradition in his life.
