Spring is around the corner, but don’t rush the garden! Learn how to time your planting, understand climate needs, and maximize your garden’s potential with companion planting and Bokashi composting. Join us to get your garden ready before the end of April for a successful, productive season!

Garden Planning: Key Points for Spring
Timing is Everything

  • Spring can be tempting—sunny days make you eager to plant, but it’s important to plan carefully.
  • Early planting can extend the growing season, but rushing can lead to disappointment.

Understand Climate & Plant Requirements

  • Know the climate needs of your plants and the typical spring planting times for your region.
  • Some vegetables can be planted as soon as the soil is workable; others need warmer soil or should wait until frost risk has passed.
  • Aim to plant by the end of April for optimal results.

Planting Guidelines:
Cool-Weather Plants:

  • Can be planted early, as soon as soil is workable.

Warm-Weather Plants:

  • Wait until the soil has warmed up.

Frost-Sensitive Plants:

  • Wait until all danger of frost is past.

Garden Efficiency Tips
Companion Planting:

  • Plant different species together for mutual benefits.
    • Maximize available space.
    • Minimize pests, weeds, and plant diseases.
    • Attract pollinators.
    • Improve overall plant health and productivity.

Bokashi Composting
What is Bokashi?

  • A fermentation process that creates rich compost more quickly than traditional decomposition.
  • It can be added year-round, even in winter.

Why Use Bokashi?

  • Complements traditional composting, offering more nutrients in less time.
  • Learn how to convert kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost.

About the Instructors

Mattea Bujold and Didier Hutchison have lived in our community their entire married life, raising their three kids in the house they purchased “because of the yard”. They both grew up in gardening families so it was natural that they would continue on with their own home garden. In recent years they’ve magnified their focus by taking the Organic Master Gardener class together, with Mattea adding the Master Composter/Recycling class the city offers.

They began starting seedlings indoors for their own needs several years ago, and it quickly sprang into a full blown home business “ONE GARDEN”. Their primary gardening focus is definitely the sustainable side of it, with emphasis on Food Security and leaving a low impact footprint.

Mattea Bujold is Sakaw Garden’s Secretary and Master Composter.

This is the 4th year we’ve had Mattea and Didier teach this workshop, as it is a very valuable class for anyone planting a garden. Whether you’ve tried growing your own seedlings from scratch before or not, you’re bound to pick up some helpful tips to take you from seed ordering to replanting them outside when the weather warms up.
