This workshop is for directors, drama/arts educators, producers, teachers, stage managers, designers, musical directors, choreographers, and anybody who fulfills a role of authority or artistic/creative leadership in spaces where live theatre is made. We will cover a lot of material focused on how to prepare for rehearsals and then create space (once actors are in the room) so that your productions are as emboldening through the script, choreography, and actors’ performances as possible.

This class will cover:

  • fundamental theory work in understanding power, trust, and safety for rehearsal rooms
  • models for understanding trauma, artistic growth, consent, and boundaries for actors
  • best practices for play/musical selection, auditions, and setting up your rehearsals for being empowering spaces of belonging
  • how to get actors ready for exceptionally physically-, mentally-, and emotionally-demanding acts on stage
  • basic choreographic language tools for giving actionable direction to actors (without taking on the responsibility of a formal intimacy director)
  • practice applying knowledge learned with exercises focused on how to manage production needs, maintain script/story integrity and honour actors’ boundaries
