With approximately ⅔ of new farmers in Canada not coming from family farm backgrounds, (reference) many have limited access to inter-generational knowledge making it tougher to weather unpredictable weather changes , assess soil conditions, predict market demands and volatility, and adapt. This capacity is essential for new farmers, many of which have limited access to capital and land- to stay afloat in a changing agricultural landscape. In this final installment of the Breaking Barriers: Growing Future Farmers Webinar Series, we will explore the issue of access to knowledge and adaptation support.

Recognizing the scale of these challenges, farmers need critical insights and resources to navigate the complexities of modern agriculture by offering tailored training programs, mentorship, and financial resources. These programs can create a network of support that encourages collaboration and knowledge sharing, which is instrumental in helping farmers overcome obstacles and thrive in an ever-changing environment.

There is an opportunity to leverage, coordinate and build on existing capacity to share best practices and provide farmer-to-farmer mentorship opportunities with experienced growers; this in turn will work to increase ecological farming and business management, and farm safety information and tools. Farming programs also help to combat social isolation and connect farmers with similar lived experiences, including newcomers, and other populations who are underrepresented in the broader agricultural sector, or in their communities - essential to farmer mental health.

This important discussion will include speakers who will share information about existing farmer initiatives, gaps in resources and programs, and solutions to increase opportunities for capacity building and resources for new and young growers across the country.

Join us- together we can break down the barriers that stand between new farmers and their dreams of successful, sustainable farming enterprises.
