This enchanting evening explores cantatas for multiple sopranos and instrumental solos from three major Italian music centres: Venice, Bologna, and Rome. The final Luigi Rossi cantata depicts three maidens returning home from a ball, all the while deconstructing their suitors’ pickup lines!
Myriam Leblanc, soprano
Jolaine Kerley, soprano
Dawn Bailey, soprano
Josephine van Lier, cello, viola da gamba
Christopher Bagan, harpsichord, organ
Lucas Harris, lutes
After centuries of being almost completely absent from the historical record, female musicians suddenly took the spotlight in seventeenth-century Italy. Especially popular were trios of singing ladies, who entranced audiences with the sound of their gorgeous voices interwoven into tight harmonies (think of a Baroque version of the “Andrews sisters”!).
