Join us for a special screening of Trusted to Serve, a one-hour documentary examining racism and far-right extremism in the Canadian Armed Forces, and the experiences of some of those who have served.
Canadian filmmaker Nauzanin Knight will attend and introduce the film, which was produced by her company, 1844 Studios, and is distributed by KinoSmith.
Seating is limited. Please complete this registration form to reserve your place.
Drawing on investigative reporting, classified and unclassified reports, and interviews with current and former military personnel, Trusted to Serve examines the persistence of racism, xenophobia, and far-right extremism within Canada's military. The film raises urgent questions about institutional culture, accountability, and the meaning of service.
Featured Speakers and Panel DiscussionDr. W. Andy Knight, Distinguished University Professor of Political Science at the University of Alberta, will present the screening. His research on xenoracism and white supremacy in the Canadian Armed Forces received support through the Department of National Defence's MINDS program. He previously served as the university's inaugural Provost Fellow in Black Excellence and Leadership, advancing efforts to address anti-Black racism and strengthen Black recruitment, retention, and curriculum development.
Nauzanin Knight, the film's director, is a Canadian writer, director, and producer of Afro-Caribbean and Middle Eastern descent. Her socially engaged work explores equity, identity, and human rights. Her other projects include The Forbidden University, about the resilience of the Bahá'í community in Iran, and Precarity, which explores the lives of temporary foreign workers in Alberta.
Following the screening, Dr. Jared Wesley and Dr. Feodor Snagovsky will join a panel discussion exploring the film's themes and their implications for the Canadian Armed Forces and Canadian society.
