Bridging Cultures Through Cinema

For its 12th edition, the India Film Festival of Alberta draws on the five elements — Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space — known in Indian philosophy as the Pancha Bhuta. They are the foundation of all life, and they are honoured in Indigenous traditions around the world.

The 2026 artwork brings these elements together on a postage stamp — a message sent between Northeast India and Alberta. Earth rises in the mountains, forests and First Nations lands of Alberta. Water flows through rivers and waterfalls, and through a film reel winding like a river across the land. Fire glows in the campfire and the rising sun. Air carries the hornbill and birds in flight. Space opens into the northern lights and the starry sky.

Where these elements meet, cultures meet too. Through film, music, dance and art, IFFA 2026 celebrates the intersections between Indigenous communities of Canada and India — bridging cultures through cinema.
