Participants will start with a sketch as the basis for their collage. Your instructor will provide easy people-drawing tutorials, so no drawing experience is necessary. Participants will be guided on sketching, cutting, and assembling their portraits using recycled paper, print, and collage materials. Participants are welcome to create collage portraits of others, or of animals or pets if they prefer! These portraits are cute framed and hung up, they make a great gift, or they can be used as a basis for a stop motion animations! 

This workshop is recommended for ages 16+.  

This workshop is a part of ENVIRON: Material Literacy & Repair Initiative, a public programming series focused on waste reduction, repair, and material reuse. This initiative is developed with support from the City of Edmonton through the Waste Reduction and Reuse Grant. 

About your Instructor:    

Hannah Gelderman is a practicing visual artist and visual arts instructor at the City Arts Centre and at King’s University. Hannah currently works in the arts and culture sector as well as community services. Her artistic practice is informed by her participation in the climate justice movement as well as her appreciation of the land and watersheds that sustain us. Hannah primarily works in 2D media – hand cut collage, stop motion animations, and printmaking. Within this, she expresses the way humans are connected to each other and the ecosystems that we live in. Hannah uses her artistic practice to navigate the disruption we currently face, share ideas that motivate her, and envision what change is possible. Her work is an invitation for viewers to reflect their own connections, emotions and actions in the face of the world we live in.
