Join us for the premiere of two inspiring documentary films celebrating the stories, resilience, and contributions of Kyrgyz Canadians.
Resilient Roots: Stories of Kyrgyz Canadians is a community storytelling event celebrating the experiences, achievements, and cultural heritage of the Kyrgyz community in Canada.
The event will premiere two original documentary films created through a youth-led initiative:
Kyrgyz Culture in Canada: Community, Heritage, and Resilience – highlighting the community's journey, resilience, and contributions to Canadian society. The film explores the journey of Kyrgyz newcomers in Canada, highlighting their efforts to preserve their cultural heritage, support one another, and build a sense of community while navigating the challenges and opportunities of life in a new country.
Belonging on the Carpet: Story of Saule Ashimova. This documentary chronicles the resilient journey of Saule Ashimova, an immigrant rhythmic gymnast who, after years of facing exclusionary barriers due to her immigration status, transformed her personal challenges into a mission to create an inclusive gymnastics club that ensures every young athlete has the opportunity to belong, regardless of their background.
Following each film, audiences will hear directly from community leaders, stakeholders, and featured guests during engaging panel discussions exploring identity, belonging, immigration, cultural preservation, and community leadership.
Whether you are a member of the Kyrgyz community, interested in multiculturalism, passionate about storytelling, or simply curious to learn about one of Canada's growing communities, everyone is welcome.
