Critical Mass returns for Bike Month!
Join YEG Bike Coalition on Friday, June 26 for the return of Critical Mass Edmonton.
We'll meet at Alexander Circle starting at 5pm and roll out at 5:30 p.m. for an easy, family-friendly ride of about 8.8 km.
This is the first ride in our new monthly Critical Mass series. We'll ride on the last Friday of each month from June to October, ending with our annual Halloween Critical Mass on October 30.
Critical Mass is for everyone. Kids on cargo bikes, bakfiets, trailers, and their own bikes are welcome. People on e-bikes, rollerblades, scooters, skateboards, and other human-scale mobility devices are welcome too. Basically: anything that does not have a gas motor.
We'll be riding mostly on quiet streets and along a corridor that is supposed to get a Local Street Bikeway this summer. This route is already seeing the usual pushback from people who "support bike lanes" but are "concerned this is not the right place." Critical Mass is one way we show that safe bike routes are needed, used, and supported.
After the ride, we'll head to a post-ride social/cash mob nearby. The ride ends at West Block so there are plenty of choices.
What is Critical Mass?
Critical Mass rides make people on bikes visible.
They remind city leaders that Edmonton needs safe, smart, and connected bike infrastructure. People are already biking. More people would bike if the streets felt safe enough for them, their kids, their friends, and their neighbours.
Bike Month is a great time to celebrate cycling. It is also a good time to remind the City that celebration is not enough. We need streets where people can ride without fear.
