From Recognition to Transformation: Surviving, Interrupting, and Healing Harm in Nonprofit Organizations

This new full-day, participatory workshop supports nonprofit workers, leaders, and community practitioners in moving beyond recognition toward collective response and healing.
Nonprofit organizations are often rooted in values of care and justice, yet many nonprofit workers experience harmful, oppressive, or abusive behaviours within their workplaces.
Participants are invited to identify and name toxic behaviours in nonprofit spaces, explore their impacts on individuals, teams, and organizational culture, and examine practical strategies for survival, interruption, and transformation. Grounded in trauma-aware facilitation and collective reflection, the workshop focuses on patterns and systems rather than personal disclosure, honouring participants' boundaries and lived realities.
Through interactive activities, small-group dialogue, and embodied learning, participants build shared language and practical tools for addressing harm while holding accountability, care, and sustainability together in nonprofit work. This is the first time we will be offering and piloting this session which will be co-facilitated by Wen Chan and Renée Vaugeois.
