Join us for a special Black History Month event as we commemorate and honour the legacy of Black Communities in Edmonton.
Black History Month (BHM) is observed annually to commemorate and honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities. In Edmonton, BHM is community-led, and comprises events and initiatives that celebrate and promote Black communities and businesses in the city. 2026 marks the centennial year of Black History Month and various Black-led organizations would be hosting diffefrent activities to commemorate this month.
In 2024, the City of Edmonton partnered with Africa Centre, Edmonton Heritage Council and Edmonton Community Foundation to launch the Black History Month Initiatives Fund. The Fund supports grassroots Black History Month programming by increasing access to financial resources, strengthening local organizational capacity, and amplifying events and celebrations across Edmonton.
The Black History Month Initiatives Fund event provides the sharing and promoting of Cultural Diversity and Education. The community at large is invited to learn, support/embrace multiculturalism and diversity towards enhancing community wellness. The Funder’s event will highlight the 2025 fund recipients as well as showcase and promote the 2026 recipients and their various initiatives/events taking place all month long. This event will showcase the progress of this initiative.
The Funder’s event is community led and is curated and delivered by the community with support from the Funding partners. It will have different showcases of performing arts, speeches, cultural exhibitions, and displays regarding Black History and its significance. These will also be present at various events happening all month long.
