A landmark community art exhibition by Edmonton artist Jabari Broodhagen (BRüdi) that resurrects the remarkable, often overlooked story of the Coloured Hockey League of Canada (CHL)—an all-Black league founded in 1895, decades before the NHL.
Breaking Barriers is a landmark community art exhibition by Edmonton artist Jabari Broodhagen (BRüdi) that resurrects the remarkable, often overlooked story of the Coloured Hockey League of Canada (CHL)—an all-Black league founded in 1895, decades before the NHL. Through bold, mixed-media portraits and narrative works, the exhibition illuminates the players, pastors, and communities who changed the game and challenged the status quo.
Expect an evening that blends art, culture, and sport: gallery viewing, short talks on CHL history, live performance, and space for conversation and connection. Join us to celebrate resilience, representation, and Canadian heritage brought to life through contemporary art.
