Join us for a discussion of how to navigate misinformation and disinformation when trying to understand the issues, candidates, and priorities during elections. Hear from journalists from Edmonton and Calgary as we prepare for the October 20th Elections.


Panelists:

Tracy Johnson

Director, Journalism and Programming CBC Calgary

Tracy Johnson is the Director of Journalism at CBC Calgary. She started her career as a business and economics reporter with the Report on Business magazine, before joining the CBC in the late 1990s. She created the CBC's western Business unit and co-created the Cost of Living, CBC's national business radio show. She also oversaw CBC Radio's local programming for seven years, including the Calgary Eyeopener and the Homestretch.


Darren Krause – Founder / Editor Livewire Calgary

The importance of community news was ingrained in Darren early in his journalism career during a two-year stint as a reporter, then editor, at the Vulcan Advocate weekly newspaper in Vulcan, Alberta starting in 2000.

Those two years provided the foundation to branch off from the newspaper world into a successful writing business. Writing credits included Today's Parent, Canadian Geographic, Alberta Venture, Westworld and numerous other magazines, along with the ghostwriting of more than 100 e-books.

Karen Unland

Editor-in-Chief Taproot Edmonton

She/Her

Karen is the co-founder of Taproot Publishing, which publishes Taproot Edmonton, the best source of reliable intelligence about the Edmonton region. Before embarking on a career in entrepreneurial journalism, she spent 15 years in newspapers, including four years as editor in charge of the Edmonton Journal's website.

Dr. Feo Snagovsky is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Alberta. His research examines political behaviour, identity, and how elites influence political attitudes.
