Join fellow Directors and Executives in a provocative and engaging format designed to challenge how we think about productivity. With powerful stories from Alberta leaders and real-time interaction, this session brings productivity governance to life.

Series Context

The ICD Edmonton Chapter is hosting a three-part event series focused on the Board's role in driving innovation and productivity. While often discussed, these themes remain under-leveraged in Canadian boardrooms. Alberta, in particular, shows considerable opportunity for leadership in both areas. This series is intentionally designed to provoke bold thinking, open dialogue, and practical action. Not just focused on why Alberta has a productivity and innovation gap, but what we—as Directors—are going to do about it. As stewards of our organizations, we are a critical force in shaping Alberta's future.

Session 1: Governing Innovation: Powering Canada's Competitiveness & Productivity

Canada is facing a growing competitiveness and productivity gap, and boards are uniquely positioned to help close it. In today's rapidly evolving economy, effective governance goes beyond oversight — it requires directors to stimulate, enable, and protect innovation. Boards have the opportunity to create the conditions where CEOs and executive teams can confidently take calculated risks, pursue bold strategies, and invest in transformative technologies.

This session brings together senior executives and experienced corporate directors for a practical, candid discussion on how governance can fuel innovation while balancing risk and accountability.

Through real-world case studies and insights from leading organizations, our panelists will explore how boards can:

  • Champion and fund strategic R&D and innovation initiatives
  • Provide CEOs and executive teams with the cover needed to innovate amid short-term pressures
  • Build governance frameworks that foster experimentation while managing downside risks
  • Strengthen collaboration between boards and management to move innovation from strategy to measurable results

This session is designed for directors and executives seeking practical insights and actionable tools to enable innovation, drive sustainable growth, and shape Canada's economic future.

Note: Please arrive by 7:30 a.m. to enjoy a breakfast buffet, with the panel discussion taking place from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
