Spindrift: A Climber’s Journey, is a 2022 documentary by Andy Arts, Hank Van Wheelden, and Ivan Hughes about renowned Canadian mountaineer, Barry Blanchard, chronicling his life as a climber and his deep connection to the world of alpinism. The film explores Blanchard’s early fascination with the mountains and traces his evolution into one of Canada’s most celebrated climbers. It showcases his notable expeditions, including climbs in the Canadian Rockies, the Himalayas, and South America, all while emphasizing his deep respect for the natural world and the intense personal experiences that come with high-risk mountaineering. The film is not just about the technical aspects of climbing, but also delves into the emotional and spiritual journey of a climber constantly pushing the boundaries of physical endurance and personal limits. It highlights the camaraderie between climbers, the danger of the sport, and the sacrifices involved in pursuing such a passion. Blanchard’s reflections on life, mortality, and the mountains offer a poignant narrative throughout the film.

The film is being hosted in partnership with the non-profit Alpine Club of Canada – Edmonton Section. The Alpine Club of Canada is dedicated to fostering mountaineering, climbing, and outdoor adventure. Established in 1906, the ACC promotes exploration and conservation of the country’s alpine and wilderness environments. It offers a range of programs, including mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing, hiking, and backcountry skiing, catering to all skill levels. The ACC’s work is centered around building a strong mountain community, offering members opportunities for education, skill development, and leadership in outdoor pursuits. The club operates a network of alpine huts and maintains trails, while also advocating for environmental stewardship and safe practices in the mountains. Its purpose is to inspire a deeper connection to the mountains, support outdoor enthusiasts, and promote the responsible use and protection of Canada’s wilderness areas.
