Harcourt House will host an opening reception for the exhibitions “with & of (Becoming Rock)” by  Jessica Slipp and the “Breath Scaling” by Alicia Proudfoot.

The Main Gallery features the exhibition “with & of (Becoming Rock)”Jessica Slipp, a Montréal-based interdisciplinary artist, explores the fusion between humans and the landscape with an immersive multimedia installation that includes video performances and paper sculptures. Enhanced by ambient soundscapes, the looping videos convey the cyclical nature of time. Paper sculptures, resembling rock formations, reflect Slipp’s process of camouflaging herself into the landscape using digital prints of rock textures. Her work challenges perceptions of body and earth, advocating for a more empathetic relationship with nature amidst ecological crises.

The Art Incubator Gallery showcases “Breath Scaling,” an exhibition of miniature sculptures and experimental mixed media works by Alicia Proudfoot – an Edmonton-based interdisciplinary artist – that charts the artist’s asthmatic body as arduous terrain. The project is the direct result of Proudfoot’s continued exploration of topographic notation in sculpture and installation that thematically extends the recognition of all bodies as terrain. Experimentation is valuable to Alicia Proudfoot as she explores humour’s role through her somatic archive of illness. Many of the featured  work in the exhibition project include foldable mountain maquettes made from metal light switch covers, mixed media prints of cartographic notation, selected visual diary entries, and other paraphernalia. Upon this somatic survey Alicia Proudfoot hopes to inspire deeper conversations that reassess our perception of heroism, adventures, and the habitual oversimplification to conflate illness with identity. SUM Canada Enterprises Ltd. is a Presenting Partner of this exhibition project.
