Anthem of Life, Part 1

June 19, 2024 to July 6, 2024

Alberta Avenue Community Centre
More Information
Organized by: Theatre Prospero

The Gods create humans, but some insist it was not wise, and that the new creations must be destroyed! Others strive to empower mankind. Cosmic intrigues, battles, quests, trials and triumphs, among gods, animals, and other beings follow, as humanity struggles for a belonging on Earth.

This tale came down to South African Poet Laureate Mazisi Kunene from his Swazi Court Poet Ancestors, which he then shaped into an epic poem, Anthem of the Decades. Tololwa Mollel’s Anthem of Life trilogy brings that epic to the stage, to be performed by arainbow ensemble in aproduction by Theatre Prospero. The production interweaves South, East and West African and South Asian music and dance, epic-scale mask and puppetry, and African-style storytelling, to create aconfidently inclusive piece of new Canadian Classical Theatre.
