A New Solution for Decarbonizing Commercial Buildings: Exploring Hydrogen's Impact and Opportunities

Building owners face numerous challenges, including managing sustainability, reliability of building systems and operational costs. Decarbonizing commercial buildings at scale presents limited options, but hydrogen in Alberta is emerging as a viable solution.

Driven by the pursuit of affordable, safe, and scalable alternatives that allow for sustained economic development, ATCO is working in alignment with Alberta's Hydrogen Roadmap and the province's Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan to integrate hydrogen into the heating network. ATCO is poised to build the initial infrastructure necessary to enable the creation of a clean hydrogen economy in the province, unlocking new opportunities for growth while addressing the pressing issue of emissions reduction. This presentation will explore the status of the hydrogen initiative, its impact on heating customers across the capital region, and the transformative economic opportunities for the region.

PRESENTER

Greg Caldwell

Greg Caldwell's professional experience consists of petroleum and pipeline engineering, business strategy and regulatory policy in the utility industry. Greg's current focus is leading the development of a utility hydrogen strategy for ATCO which encompasses the technical, policy, regulatory, and economic model creation to transform gaseous utility systems.

Currently participating on national and international committees with the Canadian Gas Association and in partnership with multiple levels of government, Greg is focused on the funding and testing of emerging technologies aimed at economically combating carbon emissions at scale, promoting greater energy security, and developing alternative pathways for Canadians to provide for their energy needs.

In addition, Mr. Caldwell serves as the Canadian Chair of the International Gas Union's (IGU) Research and Development Committee, as well as on the Energy Transition Advisory Committee, which advises the City of Edmonton on methods to implement their community energy strategy.
