Grasslands store carbon thus offsetting climate change and supporting biodiversity. However, they are also Canada's most endangered ecosystem. Cattle can help improve grasslands and play an important role in their conservation but they also create large amounts of methane that contributes to climate change. In this session, we will discuss the relationship between cows, climate change, and grasslands in the Canadian Prairies to better understand some of the complexities of sustainable beef production.

Cameron Carlyle is an Associate Professor of Rangeland Ecology in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science. He studies how cattle grazing management affects soil carbon and biodiversity in grasslands, and teaches classes on plant ecophysiology and grassland conservation. He lives in Edmonton with his wife and two young sons.
